So I'd say go with Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Fearow, Electabuzz, and either one of the Nidos or Dugtrio. It's based off of the still running anime with its still. If you were to have a Ground-type, the Nidos have very good movesets and have pretty decent stats (personal preference is Nidoking) making them really fun to use, and Dugtrio is great if you want something that hits fast and hard (it's the fastest Ground-type in the game, base 120 speed). So we'll be covering more or less every aspect of Pokemon and Pocket Monsters in the first generation, including the chosen game: Pokemon Yellow was released in September 1998 in Japan (just before the release of Red and Blue in America), October 1999 in America and June 2000 in Europe. Thankfully, Electric-types are pretty scarce in the Gen 1 games, so you shouldn't have to worry too much except for Lt. And while Venusaur resists it, it doesn't learn Earthquake in this generation. I'd say go for Electabuzz for an Electric-type since it has the best movepool out of all the available Electric-types except Zapdos. Pikachu is terrible, yes, I personally would ditch it. So we got Pikachu, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Fearow, and you want to get rid of Haunter and Graveler, so we'll count out those two. Pokemon Pokémon Adventures, originally released in Japan as Pocket Monsters Special is a Pokémon-related manga based on the video games.

Just play with your favorites and what you think will be fun to use. Dude, I'm sorry, but "choose a team you like" is really all it boils down to.
